‘They say that from the instant he lays eyes on her, a father adores his daughter. Whoever she grows up to be, she is always to him that little girl in pigtails. She makes him feel like Christmas. In exchange, he makes a secret promise not to see the awkwardness of her teenage years, the mistakes she makes or the secrets she keeps.‘ ~ Unknown
Over the past 19 years, my father has been my protector, financial adviser, comforter and my rock. 25 years of his life have been dedicated to guiding me and my brother towards success and happiness. He has taught me lessons about relationships, life and work.
20 Things I Learned From My Dad
1. Doesn’t matter where you’re coming from.
In life, we convince ourselves that we cannot do things because of
who we are or where we come from. My dad has always shown me that I am capable of doing
anything I want, irrelevant of what has happened beforehand. With a good work ethic and a positive attitude, you can go anywhere.
2. But it matters where you start.
If you don’t think about what you are doing, there is no point doing it. Logical thinking about what you’re doing saves time, money and effort. Taking 5 minutes to think about what you are doing can make you suddenly see things in perfect clarity.
3. Comedy is a gift.
The best thing you can do is make people laugh. People love to laugh, and being the one to make them laugh is a gift. This doesn’t have to mean that you’re on stage at a comedy club, just bringing happiness and joy to the people around you will do.
4. Put on a brave face.
My dad was always aware of how much I wanted to be like him and my brother, they have always been my role models. So, whenever I was scared or hurt, he would encourage me to be brave and brush it off. And putting on a brave face made it better, it gave me something else to concentrate on.
5. Girls can play football.
I never felt a huge gender influence in my life, girls can play football and become a plumber, and boys can play netball and become a dancer. It was not till school that I became aware of boys and girls conforming to their gender, although I never did. Don’t let people tell you that you can’t do anything because of your gender!
6. The choice is yours.
You always have a choice. If you’re not happy, change something, it doesn’t matter what you’re ‘supposed’ to do! Listen to your heart and do what needs to be done for you to be happy, if it works out great! If not, then its an experience.
7. You will always find time for who and what you love.
It doesn’t matter how busy you think you are, if you love something you will always find the time. Saying you’re too busy means that it is not a priority, because if it was you would be telling someone else you are too busy.
8. Distance makes the heart grow fonder.
Distance makes you appreciate each other and the value of them in your life. It can be hard, and sometimes you miss them, but distance can bring you closer than ever before.
9. You can get far by making friends with the right people.
By getting the right people to like you, you can go far in life. Proving yourself to be a good, hard working person is the gateway to success in your career, friendships and love life.
10. Don’t be scared to make enemies.
You can’t be scared of making enemies, they are proof that you are making a difference and stand up for something. People will only dislike you if you stand up for yourself or something.
11. Sometimes you need to stand up and fight.
There are times when you need to voice your opinion and fight for your beliefs. whether it be religious or personal, you need to stand up and fight for what you think. If there needs to be a change, make it happen.
12. Sometimes you need to let sleeping dogs lie.
There are times when you just need to accept that some people will never change, and there is absolutely nothing you can do.
13. Your family is important.
Never forget about your family, they raised you and they love you! Your family will always make time for you and will help to support you in you life.
14. You’ll never be happy waiting.
”Don’t bother searching for the light at the end of the tunnel…..march right up there and turn the b*stard thing on yourself.” Sarah Millican
15. If you inspire people, you will never be forgotten.
If you can inspire people then you will always be remembered, you will be a fairy story for kids and grandkids, a legend.
16. Life is short.
When you are young, slim and unemployed you think that you live forever, but then you wake up one morning and your 45, overweight with 2 kids and a full time job. Enjoy being young!
17. Looks don’t last forever.
Beauty is a temporary indulgence, you need to make your personality brilliant and marry for love, not looks.
18. Without your mind, you are powerless.
Your mind is your greatest weapon, seeking knowledge will help make it stronger and you more powerful.
19. If you’re happy, be happy.
Stop waiting for something bad to happen and just enjoy the goodness of right now. Life has its ups and downs, so learn to enjoy the good times, or it may as well be constant downs.
20. If you can type, you can do anything.
If you can write, and have access to the internet, you can do anything. Except plaster. Plastering is really hard.
